Traffic
Slower speeds in the usual pain points across the Denver metro. As per usual, there is a ton of traffic on the main roads, which are no fun to be on anyway.
Major highlights, if any:
I-25 northbound is really going through it this morning. We have slower speeds than usual, road paving closing the center lane, and even a crash which reduces traffic to one lane near I-25 and I-70 intersection.
Only other thing of note is there is debris found on the road in pueblo so drive slow down there.
We love to hear about how your morning commute was or is going, unless of course you are driving; please do not text and drive, it is not the best way to appear on the show.

Local Coloradans may already know of this bittersweet news, but I have some information to share with the class.
Question: Who of you, listeners, went to a Colorado public school?
I for one did, and in my public school journey, I was blessed with a number of school fieldtrips to the Butterfly Pavilion. This if of course the home to Rosie the Tarantula, and more recently to her cousin Goldie. Let’s put a pin in that.

They are known by the pavilion as Arachnid Ambassadors (i think this is a really cool title). Rosy has been this ambassador for them since 1995, and well it takes a lot of time and energy to prepare a tarantula to become Rosie. There have actually been about 140 tarantulas who have played this role.
I mentioned training, and I actually want to shout out a friend of the show who inspired me to put together this information. So from this friend, who recently made friends with someone who works at the butterfly pavilion, he learned that it takes a while before it is safe to get a tarantula prepared to be handled as frequently as Rosie. Generally you have to train them to be comfortable with this kind of lifestyle, and if it doesn’t work out for the tarantula, then they are generally set to be in their own habitat to be viewed like a normal exhibit. Anyway, you have to wait till they are a few years old and generally more docile, sometimes as much as 5-10 years old before they’re ready to take up this mantle. Female Chilean rose hair tarantulas can live upwards of 20 plus years. For those who are concerned that this is not good for the animals; don’t worry, we will get to that I promise. Before we get there, however, it is important to note that they had a number of methods to keep the spiders happy. They only work for two hours every seven days, and if they show signs that they do not want to be handled anymore, then they can go off and not be Rosie anymore. This doesn’t mean they die, again they go off to support other roles, like a normal exhibit or are sent off to other zoo’s nationwide.
Now before we get to the fate of Rosie and Goldie, let’s go back to when I first brought this up. Rosie is a Colorado staple, and especially so for those of us who grew up here. I remember going on the field trip to the butterfly pavilion. It was a heavily talked about event for those older than me, and when it was my turn to make the trip, I remember being so anxious. The pressure to hold Rosie when you went was make or brake for social status. (Side note, this is a trip we did in like elementary school so yeah). We get there, and my friends and I decided to wander around elsewhere for a while and make our way around to hold Rosie as a leaving activity. Lunch comes around and you know exactly who already made their way into legend status as they got the sticker. This was a “I Held Rosie” sticker, essentially your trophy. Seeing this, we knew it was our time, so we muster the courage and get in the line to see Rosie. When it was nearly my turn, I remember wanting to back out. I was always so scared of spiders. So of course now I was standing face to face with essentially my largest fear of the time. My friends ended up going ahead of me, which helped ease my anxiety, and I did end up actually holding Rosie. I remember her being so calm. Her legs were sticky and she didn’t really move around so much. The whole moment was quite calming. As soon as it started, it ended and I felt actually pretty good. It helped me get over being scared about spiders and also I was now in this coveted social group in school as one of the cool kids.
I am ultimately bringing this up as Rosie and Goldie are officially retired.

This change, as some can likely guess, comes from research into animal well being and that tarantulas aren’t really meant to be viewed or cared for in this way. This is a standard set by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums ( I did not know this existed before researching for this show). I encourage you to go see Rosie, while you cannot experience Rosie in the same way, you can still see her in honor of her legacy. Thank you for coming to my talk about Colorado things.

Weather for today seems to be decent most of the day. Currently 78F and the air quality is poor.
While this morning is going to be pretty nice, do expect afternoon thunderstorms coming around 3pm.
Less sun and of course allergies are still a thing.
We talked about the weather for the week ahead. It will be pretty warm and stormy generally and clear up later this weekend and next week.
